Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy

As primary health care professionals, physiotherapists combine in-depth knowledge of how the body works with specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability.

With your independence in mind, our registered physiotherapists’ goal is to restore, maintain and maximize your strength, function, movement and overall well-being and they will prescribe personalized therapeutic exercises, and provide essential education about the body, what keeps it from moving well, how to restore mobility and independence, and how to avoid or prevent bodily harm. Your physiotherapist will begin treatment with an extensive assessment that may include health history, evaluation of pain and movement patterns, strength, joint range of motion, reflexes, sensation, and heart and lung function.

Based on this assessment, your physiotherapist will establish a diagnosis and work in partnership with you and the rest of the rehabilitative team to develop an individualized treatment program that includes:

  • Manual joint mobilizations and soft-tissue manipulation
  • Myofascial release and passive muscle energy work
  • Therapeutic modalities which include: ultrasound, interferential currents, neuromuscular stimulation, TENS, infrared therapy, vibration therapy, acupuncture, cryotherapy, thermal therapy, and continuous passive movement devices
  • Postural and activity education/modifications
  • Orthopaedic device prescription and education (crutches, bracing, slings, canes)
  • Advanced exercise prescription and monitoring
  • Return to sport and work planning/simulation
Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy

As skilled healthcare practitioners, Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) employ their comprehensive knowledge of human anatomy and manual techniques. RMTs asses and treat various symptoms associated with physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissues and joints.

As an integral part of the comprehensive rehabilitative team at Ridley Heights Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, our RMTs have comprehensive training in Therapeutic and Sport Massage.

Therapeutic Massage:

Therapeutic Massage can be defined in different ways, often dependent on an individual’s past experience with massage. Here at Ridley Heights Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, we use an evidence based approach with a variety of techniques. We customize our patient care to ensure treatment goal(s) are being identified and met. Therapeutic Massage is a highly effective method to improve rehabilitation, as well as acute, sub-acute, and chronic pain/injuries.

Sport Massage:

The objective of Sport Massage is to aid the athlete with the purpose of enhancing the athlete’s preparation for, or recovery from, the physical demands of training or competition. This is comprised of three parts: pre, inter, and post event, all crucial to propel the athlete to perform at their highest level. Our therapists at Ridley Heights Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation have participated in additional training in Sport Massage for our patients.

Your Registered Massage Therapist will conduct a thorough assessment to determine the appropriate clinical indication. They will then collaborate with you and the rehabilitation team to develop a personalized program tailored to your specific needs.

This could include:

  • Myofascial Release: Breaks up fascia while elongating musculature
  • Trigger Point Therapy: Diminishes hyper-irritable area(s) in a muscle associated with muscle tension
  • Joint mobilizations: Improves restricted range of motion in joints while decreasing pressure and pain
  • Home Exercise Program: Catered towards strengthening musculature to reduce pain, improve range of motion and enhance function
Chiropractic

WHAT IS A Chiropractic?

Chiropractic care is a holistic approach to health that focuses on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders, particularly those related to the spine. At Ridley Heights Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, we incorporate chiropractic techniques to address issues such as back pain, neck pain, and headaches. By using manual adjustments and other therapeutic methods, our skilled chiropractors work to restore proper alignment to the spine, improve nerve function, and enhance overall mobility. This hands-on approach helps to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and promote the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

In addition to spinal adjustments, chiropractic care at our clinic emphasizes the importance of preventative and rehabilitative strategies. Our chiropractors employ a range of techniques, including spinal manipulation, soft tissue therapy, and corrective exercises, to address the root causes of discomfort and enhance overall function. By focusing on both the immediate relief of symptoms and the long-term maintenance of spinal health, chiropractic care aims to prevent future issues and promote a balanced, pain-free lifestyle. Through personalized treatment plans and ongoing assessment, our goal is to support your body’s natural healing processes and improve your overall well-being.

Concussion Management

WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?

A concussion is a brain injury caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain within the skull following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. The impact causes a biochemical imbalance within the brain cells, resulting in decreased blood flow and temporary energy deficits within the brain. Symptoms may include loss of consciousness, headache, pressure in the head, neck pain, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, or balance problems, among others.

CONCUSSION TREATMENT

Multimodal baseline testing is a series of physical and cognitive tests that provides a pre-injury overview of healthy brain function. These tests can offer healthcare practitioners with an objective benchmark on which to compare should a patient sustain a concussion.

As concussion symptoms often disappear days to weeks before the brain has recovered, having valuable baseline information may help practitioners to make safer return to play decisions.

Vertigo & BPV Treatment

Vertigo & BPV Treatment

Vestibular rehabilitation is an evidence-based approach to managing problems caused by vestibular disorders, primarily dizziness, vertigo, motion sensitivity, balance and postural control issues.

Vestibular rehabilitation is a highly effective method to improve the quality of life of those with disorders of the vestibular or central balance mechanisms.

A rehabilitation program will be tailored for your specific needs and will include:

  • Oculomotor exercises
  • Vestibular based treatment and exercises
  • Balance re-education exercises
  • Gait training exercises
  • Manual therapy
  • In cases of BPPV, specific canalith repositioning maneuvers will be used
